ROCHELLE FLEMING LOVE ITCH

First Choice lead singer Rochelle Fleming has one of the most distinctive and enduring voices of the disco era. The Philadelphia, PA, native's vocals range from breathless urgency, as on the group's first big hit "Armed and Extremely Dangerous" (a Top 20 R&B hit from 1973), to saucy, energetic sensuality, as on their dance classic "Let No Man Put Asunder." In 1987, Fleming reformed a version of First Choice with her cousin Laconya Fleming and Lawrence Cottel, who recorded a single for Prelude Records, "Love Itch."

BIZARRE INC PLAYING WITH KNIVES

Bizarre Inc were a dance-pop/house/dance band from Stafford, England, that formed in 1989 as a duo of English DJs Dean Meredith and Mark "Aaron" Archer. By 1990, Archer left Meredith to work as producer and writer with different house and techno projects, a greater part of which were for Network Records. He was also known as DJ Nex for a long time; later on he released material under names such as Mr. Nex, O.P.D., Xen Mantra; and others including Nexus 21 and Altern-8 with co-producer Chris Peat. Still in the same year, two other experienced DJs joined Bizarre Inc. to fill Archer's place, thus forming a new trio: Andrew Meecham and Carl Turner. Their first 12'' they released together was "Bizarre Theme" / "X-Static" on the now-defunct record label, Vinyl Solution. This first track got a moderate acceptance, but the next, "Playing With Knives" was to be their greatest success, whose vinyl (7'' and 12'') releases were issued on a couple of different European labels.

Kraze aka. Richard Jean Laurent began songwriting and performing in 1985. In 1988 he created "I Say Shut Up" and "The Party", who became a House Music Classics even before that term existed! These songs catapulted Kraze into one of House Music's first bonafide stars, making him performing at venues ranging from the best clubs to Wembley Arena. He reached Top 10 all over the world, but especially "The Party" is still used from George Clinton to David Bowie to political campaigns to radio themes.

TEN CITY THATS THE WAY LOVE IS

The Chicago vocal group Ten City was one of the few house units to enjoy mainstream exposure during the late '80s and early '90s. Originally called Ragtyme, the trio was formed by vocalist Byron Stingily, guitarist Herb Lawson, and keyboard player Byron Burke, all under the aegis of producer extraordinaire Marshall Jefferson. After signing with Atlantic in the late '80s, Ten City's debut LP, Foundation, included the singles "Right Back to You" and "That's the Way Love Is," both of which received a good response in R&B and dance circles. Stingily went on to a solo career.

FARLEY 'JACKMASTER' FUNK LOVE CAN'T TURN AROUND

Farley created his first house music productions in 1984. His roommate at the time, Steve 'Jack Master Silk' Hurley, had produced a cover of "I Can't Turn Around" by Isaac Hayes, which sold well in the Chicago area. Before Hurley could arrange to have the record licensed for overseas distribution, Farley managed to attach his own name to a European release of a very slightly altered version of Hurley's track. The new version, "Love Can't Turn Around" by Farley Jackmaster Funk (vocals by Darryl Pandy), which charted highly in Britain, reaching number 10 in 1986

This is produced by another group of very Italian sounding names (Jovanotti, Cecchetto,Cersosimo) although released on the New York based Harbour Light label. I guess the vocals to this say it all "House music all night long". This tune has a quite unique feel to it, electro house cross over? anyhow a great Italo House track from the late 80's, always played and always loved.

SMITH & MIGHTY ANYONE

A bit to laid back for their own good to have gained any credible success or recognition on a national platform in the late 80’s/early 90’s, (it took them 7 years from the date of their first release in 1988 to 1995 when they released their debut LP, Bass is Maternal)Smith & Mighty still command significant respect amongst the more discerning music aficionados. This track was a favourite of mine payed most nights at a Nightclub in Stafford UK. It has been fifteen years since the release of their first single "Anyone". One and a half decades later, the Bristol based duo can proudly look back at their oeuvre.

CERRONE SUPERNATURE

Cerrone's third album, Supernature sold over eight million albums worldwide. A departure from the lush orchestration with electronic instrumentation added to the mix, it was co-written by Lene Lovich and was arranged by Alain Wisniak. The song "Supernature" has a sci-fi theme: it's about the rebellion of mutant creatures — created by scientists to end starvation among mankind — against the humans. It also featured "Sweet Drums", a three-minute-and-ten-second drum breakdown. The original French album cover was again different, having a gatefold opening with nudes in the centre. These two mixes below share an original version and a modern remix, both excellent.

MARSHALL JEFFERSON MOVE YOUR BODY

House music is a descendant of disco, which blended soul, R&B, funk, with celebratory messages about dancing, love, and sexuality, all underpinned with repetitive arrangements and a steady bass drum beat. House music is a style of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago, Illinois, USA in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was initially popularized in mid-1980s discothèques catering to the African-American, Latino, and gay communities, first in Chicago, then in New York City and Detroit. It eventually reached Europe before becoming infused in mainstream pop & dance music worldwide. Many of the songs that defined the Chicago house music sound were released by DJ International Records and Trax Records. In 1985, Trax released "Jack the Bass" and "Funkin' with the Drums Again" by Farley Jackmaster Funk. In 1986, Trax released "No Way Back" by Adonis, Larry Heard's (as Fingers Inc.) "Can You Feel It?" and "Washing Machine", and an early house anthem in 1986, "Move Your Body" by Marshall Jefferson, which helped to boost the popularity of the style outside of Chicago. And did I tell you I LOVE IT!! ...loads more to come.

FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD RELAX

"Relax" is the debut single by British dance group Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in the UK by ZTT Records in 1983. The song was later included on the album Welcome to the Pleasuredome (1984).
Although fairly inauspicious upon initial release, "Relax" finally reached
number one in the UK singles chart on 24 January 1984, ultimately becoming one of the most controversial and most commercially successful records of the entire decade. The single eventually sold a reported 1.91 million copies in the UK alone, making it the seventh best-selling UK single of all time. Following the release of the group's second single, "Two Tribes", "Relax" rallied from a declining UK chart position during June 1984 to climb back up the UK charts and re-attain number two spot behind "Two Tribes" at number one, representing simultaneous chart success by a single act unprecedented since the early 1960s.
Upon release in the
United States in late 1984, "Relax" repeated its slow UK progress, reaching number 67 upon initial release, but eventually reaching number 10 in March 1985. A good mix I think is the version found here, the 16min 30 sec Sex Mix....

REGINA BABY LOVE

Regina Richards, who used the stage name Regina, is a dance music singer born in Brooklyn, New York. She is best known for her hit "Baby Love", which hit #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. Initially, Regina only wished to pursue success in the mainstream style as a songwriter, with the idea that her work as a performer would remain in an alternative music vein. Regina co-wrote "Baby Love" with frequent Madonna collaborator Stephen Bray, and it was submitted to Madonna, who declined to record it - leaving Regina and Bray to record it themselves. At the time of the song's release, many people thought "Baby Love" was performed by Madonna due to the Bray slant of the sound and Regina's vocal similarity to the artist; hence, she became considered a "Madonna Wannabe" by many.

HAZELL DEAN WHATEVER I DO (WHEREVER I GO)

Dean had two bursts of success in the 1980s. Firstly, in 1984 when she scored her first top 10 hit with "Searchin' (I Gotta Find A Man)", which reached No.6 and then "Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)" in August which hit No.4. Then after a quiet three years, she returned in 1988 with another No.4 hit "Who's Leaving Who" as well as "Maybe (We Should Call It A Day)" which made the top 20. "Whatever I Do" was originally recorded by Michael Prince as "Dance Your Love Away", but the song was re-written by Mike Stock & Matt Aitken because Dean disliked the chorus.

AURRA YOU AND ME TONIGHT

Formed by Steve Washington, Curtis Jones and singer Starleana Young, Aurra had a good run in the early 80s with hits such as "Are You Single" and their biggest, "Make Up Your Mind." Combining strong instrumentation and a dance music underpinning, the group formed a solid following over a handful of albums between 1980-83. Internal strife led to the premature end of the group, with Jones and Young forming Deja, which later landed the R&B hit "You and Me Tonight."
