DONNA SUMMER I FEEL LOVE

With 36 years in the recording industry, Donna Summer is one of the few artists from the disco era to enjoy longevity in the music business. But the "Queen of Disco" tempers her place in music history with her continued evolution as an artist. This version of her 1982 classic I Feel Love is the 16 minute Patrick Cowley master piece, an absolute must for any club DJ.

CERRONE SUPERNATURE

Cerrone's third album, Supernature sold over eight million albums worldwide. A departure from the lush orchestration with electronic instrumentation added to the mix, it was co-written by Lene Lovich and was arranged by Alain Wisniak. The song "Supernature" has a sci-fi theme: it's about the rebellion of mutant creatures — created by scientists to end starvation among mankind — against the humans. It also featured "Sweet Drums", a three-minute-and-ten-second drum breakdown. The original French album cover was again different, having a gatefold opening with nudes in the centre. These two mixes below share an original version and a modern remix, both excellent.

MARSHALL JEFFERSON MOVE YOUR BODY

House music is a descendant of disco, which blended soul, R&B, funk, with celebratory messages about dancing, love, and sexuality, all underpinned with repetitive arrangements and a steady bass drum beat. House music is a style of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago, Illinois, USA in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was initially popularized in mid-1980s discothèques catering to the African-American, Latino, and gay communities, first in Chicago, then in New York City and Detroit. It eventually reached Europe before becoming infused in mainstream pop & dance music worldwide. Many of the songs that defined the Chicago house music sound were released by DJ International Records and Trax Records. In 1985, Trax released "Jack the Bass" and "Funkin' with the Drums Again" by Farley Jackmaster Funk. In 1986, Trax released "No Way Back" by Adonis, Larry Heard's (as Fingers Inc.) "Can You Feel It?" and "Washing Machine", and an early house anthem in 1986, "Move Your Body" by Marshall Jefferson, which helped to boost the popularity of the style outside of Chicago. And did I tell you I LOVE IT!! ...loads more to come.

FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD RELAX

"Relax" is the debut single by British dance group Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in the UK by ZTT Records in 1983. The song was later included on the album Welcome to the Pleasuredome (1984).
Although fairly inauspicious upon initial release, "Relax" finally reached
number one in the UK singles chart on 24 January 1984, ultimately becoming one of the most controversial and most commercially successful records of the entire decade. The single eventually sold a reported 1.91 million copies in the UK alone, making it the seventh best-selling UK single of all time. Following the release of the group's second single, "Two Tribes", "Relax" rallied from a declining UK chart position during June 1984 to climb back up the UK charts and re-attain number two spot behind "Two Tribes" at number one, representing simultaneous chart success by a single act unprecedented since the early 1960s.
Upon release in the
United States in late 1984, "Relax" repeated its slow UK progress, reaching number 67 upon initial release, but eventually reaching number 10 in March 1985. A good mix I think is the version found here, the 16min 30 sec Sex Mix....

REGINA BABY LOVE

Regina Richards, who used the stage name Regina, is a dance music singer born in Brooklyn, New York. She is best known for her hit "Baby Love", which hit #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. Initially, Regina only wished to pursue success in the mainstream style as a songwriter, with the idea that her work as a performer would remain in an alternative music vein. Regina co-wrote "Baby Love" with frequent Madonna collaborator Stephen Bray, and it was submitted to Madonna, who declined to record it - leaving Regina and Bray to record it themselves. At the time of the song's release, many people thought "Baby Love" was performed by Madonna due to the Bray slant of the sound and Regina's vocal similarity to the artist; hence, she became considered a "Madonna Wannabe" by many.

HAZELL DEAN WHATEVER I DO (WHEREVER I GO)

Dean had two bursts of success in the 1980s. Firstly, in 1984 when she scored her first top 10 hit with "Searchin' (I Gotta Find A Man)", which reached No.6 and then "Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)" in August which hit No.4. Then after a quiet three years, she returned in 1988 with another No.4 hit "Who's Leaving Who" as well as "Maybe (We Should Call It A Day)" which made the top 20. "Whatever I Do" was originally recorded by Michael Prince as "Dance Your Love Away", but the song was re-written by Mike Stock & Matt Aitken because Dean disliked the chorus.

AURRA YOU AND ME TONIGHT

Formed by Steve Washington, Curtis Jones and singer Starleana Young, Aurra had a good run in the early 80s with hits such as "Are You Single" and their biggest, "Make Up Your Mind." Combining strong instrumentation and a dance music underpinning, the group formed a solid following over a handful of albums between 1980-83. Internal strife led to the premature end of the group, with Jones and Young forming Deja, which later landed the R&B hit "You and Me Tonight."

TIMEX SOCIAL CLUB RUMORS

The Timex Social Club was a US group formed in 1982. Its members Gregory Thomas, Marcus Thompson, Kevin Moore, Michael Marshall, Craig Samuel, Darrien Cleage, and Alex Hill specialized in both old school rap and the merger of urban R&B with hip-hop rhythms, which was later known as new jack swing. The group was signed to Danya records, and their only album Vicious Rumors was released in 1986. Vicious Rumors had only one major hit on it, "Rumors", which hit #8 on the Hot 100, with Michael Marshall as the lead singer. The two following singles "Thinkin' About Ya" and "Mixed-Up World" both reached the R&B top 20. Soon afterwards, their producer Jay King replaced them with a new band that he formed, an R&B group called Club Nouveau. After 5 years of being together, the Timex Social Club broke up.

THE B.B.& Q BAND DREAMER

B. B. & Q. Band (which stands for the Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens Band), was an American disco/funk group, who were created in 1981 and disbanded in 1986. By 1985 Petrus had fixed a contract with Elektra Records and B. B. & Q. Band was back on track with their last album Genie, including minor hits like the title track "Genie" and "Dreamer". Kae Williams, a former Breakwater member hired by Petrus, wrote all tracks and co-produced the LP in conjunction with Petrus. The album also showed early examples of Curtis Hairston's fine voice when Petrus invited him to be the new lead singer. The album sold rather well, especially in Europe, but in 1986 the B. B. & Q. Band disappeared forever when Petrus was murdered.

The SOS Band is an American musical ensemble, founded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1977. The “SOS” acronym stands not for “Save Our Souls”, but for “Sounds of Success”.The band, fronted by Mary Davis, was initially famous for the post-disco hit “Take Your Time (Do It Right)” in 1979. In 1982, they joined forces with then-new production team Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who went on to craft a string of R&B hits for the group, including “Just Be Good to Me”, “Tell Me If You Still Care”, “Feeling”, and “Borrowed Love”.The Jam/Lewis produced SOS Band hits are notable for popularizing the use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine (and its distinctive cowbell sound) in popular music. RUFUS & CHAKA KHAN AIN'T NOBODY

This was the last chart single for the group before lead singer Chaka Khan (born Yvette Stevens) left for a solo career. On this track, she sings about a man who makes her feel so good, that no other can come close. Producer Quincy Jones wanted this for Michael Jackson's Thriller album, and almost got it. Rufus keyboardist David Wolinski wrote the song. The group didn't like it but recorded it anyway. It was released as a single when Wolinski threatened to pull it off the album and give it to Jackson and Jones. When Rufus was being formed, they rejected guitarist Roger Linn because he didn't sing, but this was one of the first songs ever written to the beat of Roger's invention - the LM-1 Drum, the world's first programmable, sampled-sound drum machine. In this case the machine was used to create the keyboard loop. John Robinson played live drums and overdubbed the fills.

KRAFTWERK TOUR DE FRANCE

After 1981's Computer World, Kraftwerk were anxious to begin work on their next LP. Perhaps spurred on by the warm reception (after a short of period of inactivity), Ralf Hutter, Florian Schneider, Karl Bartos and Wolfgang Flur set out working on a forthcoming album, to be titled Technopop. Technopop was to feature songs including its title track and "Sex Object", which would later surface on 1986's Electric Café. Its first single was to have been "Tour de France", and that track was in fact released in 1983. However, Technopop was not to be: due to a series of circumstances-- not least of which, Hutter's bicycle accident, which kept him out of serious action for the better part of a year-- the band decided to stretch their deadline, incorporate a few more state-of-1986 recording techniques (including, gasp, sampling) and concentrate their full length ideas on Electric Café. "Tour de France"-- not a particularly classic entry in their singles catalog in the first place-- was left to drift into nothingness, and all was tidily swept under the mouse pad. But this wasn't for long as the track has played roles in movies, adverts and many a DJ's megamix or remix as you can hear below.

MANTRONIX KING OF THE BEATS

Kurtis Mantronik never imagined that his "King Of The Beats" hit would achieve not only the title of Hip Hop quintessential tune, but also the status of Amen Break sample-based's first standard. The Amen Breaks line, based on the legendary breakbeats took from The Winstons classic "Amen, Brother" (1969) stayed in the shadows until "Amen, Brother" was included on Ultimate Breaks And Beats Volume 1 (1986), a quintessential compilation sery made for all the Breaks lovers.A major piece of the history of Hip Hop, "The King Of The Beats" consolidated Mantronix as one of the essential names of the genre. The tune brought a magnificent collage of quintessential breakbeats samples from 'The Winstons – Amen, Brother' s beats on the start to "Same Old Thing" by The Meters (including the quote "Same old thing! One steel is good, yo!"), "Scratchin’" by The Magic Disco Machine and the beats of 'Bob James – Take Me To The Mardi Gras' (1975) on the second half of the tune. The result is a total devastation on the dancefloors that influenced an incredible amount of producers since then ("Take Me To The Mardi Gras" beats, for example, were used since then as a basic ouverture on many Hip Hop contests, and the Amen Breaks became known to a whole new generation of producers and listeners, some of which would use them on their Hip Hop, Breakbeats, Jungle & Drum n' Bass tunes). I just love this cover to, although not the tracks sleeve, this has got to be one of the best Breakbeat covers EVER =)

Afrika Bambaataa, one of hip-hop's progenitors, was known as a talented DJ before his single Planet Rock came out in 1982 on Tommy Boy. The song, which sampled (actually re-recorded in the studio) elements of Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express and was the first R&B track to use an 808, helped define a new movement in music, electro, which then inspired Miami bass and Detroit techno, and pushed the musician's status toward near iconic.

HERBIE HANCOCK - 'ROCKIT'

The theme for breakdancers everywhere during the early '80s, "Rockit" proved the second time in Herbie Hancock's career that the jazz wizard proved surprisingly capable of grasping the commercial direction of R&B and measurably widening his audience. The first time, his 1973 album Head Hunters, Hancock became an electronic funkster and one of the best-selling jazz musicians in history. Just under a decade later, he set up shop near the intersection of jazz, industrial-funk, and hip-hop (the latter just beginning its rise to success). Producer Bill Laswell assembled a studio band including the talents of a young hip-hop DJ named Grand Mixer D.ST. At a time when virtually every American could barely fathom the idea of "playing" turntables, D.ST added a few deft scratches to the heavily mechanized arrangement. In keeping with Hancock's obvious focus on musicianship, the single was actually recorded live in the studio, with Hancock's keyboards and rigid synthesizer lines over D.ST's scratching and all. When the song was released in late 1983 as a single and on Hancock's Future Shock LP, it hit the Top Ten in Britain. Though it barely managed to hit the American charts at all, "Rockit" became a massive underground hit, especially in New York and Chicago.

KRAFTWERK - COMPUTERWELT

For me personally at a time of Punk and British heavy metal although both listened to and not hated the early 80's for me was the sound of Electro, both from the US and Europe. On a European vibe Kraftwerk were untouchable right from the mid/late 70's. As a young teenager the Electro sound would soon ignite the interest in Hip Hop and the cool DJ scene that went with it.
This 12" is becoming increasingly sought after, as it features the tracks Number's and Computer World which are sequenced together, and is the only release other than the album 'Computer World' where the two tracks are mixed into one. This pressing is a lot louder and crisper than the album, which obviously makes it great for DJ's.Once heard, it's hard not to expect the sublime strings of Computer World to drop in at the end of Numbers, pure classic, uplifting, and seriously German electronics. The mix of Computer World on the a-side features a breakbeat, or a more two-step beat than the original, and is the only place you can find this mix other than the EMI promo UK LP.
